The final leg of what turned out to be a 1,414.5 kilometre ride between Sydney and the Sunshine Coast ended today. We managed to squeeze in a bit more fun riding before finishing this part of our trip with everyone else heading north out of Brisbane for Christmas.
Another grey day greeted us as we left Casino and rode north to Kyogle. We then took Kyogle Road towards Uki, at the foot of Mount Warning. We rode down this road a year before, with its fine curves and beautiful scenery, however last year it was strewn with potholes. This year, however, clearly some local activists had been at work as it now has some magnificent patches of smooth, new Tarmac. Thank you, local activists.
We were also greeted by a couple wallabies, at different times, jumping across the road in front of Gary. Another reminder to respect the country and its little dangers.
By now the sun had come out, and the temperatures started to soar. We stopped at Uki for coffee and did some planning.
We decided on the scenic route, away from the Pacific Motorway, called the Numinbah Highway. This glorious road has a wonderful smooth surface and long, sweeping curves and today, being Christmas Eve, a popular spot for motorbikers. Rumour has it that a local politician bought a house in the area just before the road was significantly improved but I am sure that this is just a coincidence.
We rejoined the Pacific Motorway at Nerang and finished our trip on the b-o-r-i-n-g motorway between the Gold Coast at the Sunshine Coast. That said, after three days of riding, we were happy to arrive to beers and smiles at the home of our lovely friends. I love riding but it can be exhausting and it’s nice to have a few days off the motorbike to recover.
Our next planned ride on this trip is to the wonderfully named, and wonderful “Town of 1770”.
